of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual pla

in the next few days, but romney's path to victory is starting to disappear. president obama is ahead in all of the vital swing states needed for victory. if the election were held today an associated press analysis shows president obama would win at least 271 electoral votes. 270 votes wins the presidency. the romney campaign, no doubt, is struggling to, say the least. romney's own running mate was forced to admit how their campaign has stumbled. >> so, yeah, we have had some missteps, but at the end of the day, the choice is really clear. we're giving people a clear choice. >> paul ryan was asked about the tax cuts for the millionaires proposed by romney and ryan's budget plans. he was a guest on fox news sunday with chris wallace and the vice presidential candidate made some missteps of his own. >> how much would it cost? >> it's revenue neutral. >> i'm just talking about -- the cut in tax rates. >> the cut in tax rates is lowered for all americans by 20%. it's revenue neutral. >> it's not unless you take away the deductions. we're going to get to that. the first half. lowering the tax ra

to a new fox news poll, president obama leads romney by five points among likely voters nationwide. 48% to 43%. catch that, the fox poll. highly significant there. let's go right now to howard on this question. it looks to me like this divorce papers are pretty much out there right now. all that you hear now is romney doesn't really want to be stuck in that little basement where they cut medicare. >> well, mitt romney was on the campaign trail today saying, i have a little secret, i'm going to win pennsylvania. okay. he's not going to win pennsylvania. >> it's the oldest state in the union. >> he's not going to win pennsylvania with paul ryan's profile on medicare or budget cutting or anything else. so if mitt romney is serious about making a play in pennsylvania, that just underscores how inconvenient paul ryan has become. look, mitt romney did not pick paul ryan because of paul ryan's medicare or budget programs. he picked paul ryan because of his youthfulness, because of the cultural appeal, because of what paul ryan himself calls the deer hunter catholic that he is, okay? that migh

, the obama campaign is certainly not letting people forget those comments from that private fund-raiser back in may. talking to people here, they say they're seeing that ad, seeing the obama ad, that highlights romney's comments over and over and over again in heavy rotation on television here in colorado, perhaps the ultimate swing state. so the obama campaign knows they've got a loaded weapon there and they're firing it time after time after time to much good effect from their point of view. >> chuck, i can't remember anything that's really resounded so well with one side against the other. i guess there was the dui charge in 2000 which was really a self-inflicted wound by one side. here again a somewhat self-inflicted wound although he didn't intend anybody to know about it. this 47%, i think it's a bigger number than the 1% we talked about for the last year or so, the very top people. >> well, here is where i find it made a penetration. so one of the things we have done in our nbc/"wall street journal" poll, most of it comes out in a little bit, but we asked sort of the remaining undecid

on the stage tonight. >> i'm toure. today is the obama's 20th wedding anniversary and barack is spending it talking to some guy? >> i'm s.e. cupp, that plus mortal -- mortal political combat meets presidential politics. yeah, we are going there. >> get ready for a special edition of "the cycle" on this debate wednesday, october 3rd. it starts right now. >>> it is debate day at the university of denver. as i said, we are just six hours away. you know, when i think of major events in denver, i always think of don meredith you can the old monday night football broadcaster who said, welcome to the city that's mile high and so am i. i'm not high the way don was but high with excitement in anticipation for this debate tonight. we have been waiting, it seems, for months for this thing. let's set the stage before we get going. you know, sometimes i think the cliche cliches are true. this is one of them. we heard talk about how? a do-or-die for mitt romney n a lot of ways it really is. there are basically three possible outcomes, the way i see it tonight. someone that romney really do

't work in a format like this. he has to have a good debate. he has to pass president obama in the polls if he's to be elected president, obviously. tonight, at a moment of peril for the country, where we have challenges abroad, severe challenges domestically, how do we restore our balance sheet in this country, how do we deal with the challenges abroad? we live in a serious time. and improvement and understanding in the race and transaction by question. >> just out today, the race is tied and obama up by seven and the latest nbc wall street journal poll. >> a new poll from telemundo, obama is up by 50, howard, among hispanics. let's go to howard fineman. back to my big question. he's had a terrible month or two. he does not look presidential. bill clinton and the president have been able to build up the notion that the economy's better than we thought. 57% of the people think that the economy is getting better. what a dramatic advantage. >> well, i agree with steve. this is mitt's moment. he said months ago to supporters just wait until i get on the stage with the president. just wait u
